Annual Holiday Dinner December 12 With Guest Mike Rodman

The Decatur Township Democratic Club will meet at the George T. Goodwin Center on December 12 to celebrate the holiday season. Marion County Treasurer Mike Rodman will be the guest speaker.

Dues are now being excepted for 2012, and you can renew your dues for 2012 at the December meeting. Dues will once again be $5.00 for one year. You can also elect to join the Commodore Club and become a booster for an extra $20 donation.

Fitzpatrick to be Next President of Decatur Township Democratic Club

Longtime Decatur Township Democrat, Joyce Fitzpatrick, has been elected President of the Decatur Township Democratic Club. She will take office in January for a one year term.

"Joyce will be a great President," said Jon Easter, outgoing President of the club. "She has been involved for many years in the party and in the club, and she knows how we have changed and grown. I look forward to working with her to help grow the club even more in the future."

Easter, Club President since 2008, will become the Immediate Past President and Paul Fox, the soon-to-be former Immediate Past President, will continue to head up the Membership Committee.

Fitzpatrick is the only new officer elected. Mike Cesnik will continue as Vice President. Claudia Hilligoss will be Secretary, and Patty Rigsby will still be Treasurer. The Executive Committee will be made up of members Mary Hall and Chip Pierson. Easter rounds out the committee.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club meets from March through November at Buffer Park Golf Course and from December through February at the George T. Goodwin Center. Club dues are just $5.00 per year.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on October 10. It's a special Columbus Day meeting. Halloween will be the theme. Join us for dinner at 5:45 p.m. Feel free to bring side dishes or desserts! The club meets at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz Street in Decatur.

We are currently in negotiation to get a stop by by the next Mayor of Indianapolis Melina Kennedy, and we invite any and all Democratic candidates for office in 2011 to come to the club meeting and speak.

Please bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Goodwin Center food pantry. We will also be talking about a major change that may be coming to the Goodwin Center. Chili Cookoff set for Sept. 12 Meeting of Decatur Dems

The Decatur Township Democratic Club will hold its September meeting at 6:30 p.m. on September 12. The club meets at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz Street, in Decatur Township. We will also have a small chili cookoff for bragging rights. Bring your best chili concoctions for our dinner that precedes the meeting at 5:45 p.m.

Our speaker will be Decatur Township's own Steve Terrell. Terrell is an award-winning writer and attorney who owns his own law office. Given the time, one day after the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Terrell will have a special presentation for our club members.

Also, many officeholders and candidates for office in 2011 and 2012 are expected to be in attendance. It's a great chance to meet them and find out where they stand on the issues. Please bring non-perishable food items for donation to the George T. Goodwin Center's food pantry as well.

Pierson Joins Executive Board; Easter Not Seeking Reelection

At the June meeting of the Decatur Township Democratic Club, Chip Pierson was elected to fill the open position on the Decatur Township Democratic Club Executive Board. He will serve out the term of Alexis Skriloff James who resigned in May.

President Jon Easter also announced that he would not be seeking reelection as President of the club when the new slate is presented to the club in November.

This month, in addition to the normal who's who of Marion County Democratic candidates, the club welcomes Steve Hoyt from the Carpenters Local 60 to address many of the union issues that are currently being debated downtown in Indianapolis including right to work (for less) legislation and collective bargaining protection. After Hoyt speaks at around 6:30 p.m., the club will address a few business issues.

Mardi Gras Night is Set for Feb. 14 with Terry Curry!

If it's February and the Decatur Township Democratic Club is meeting, it must mean Mardi Gras Night! This year, it's a special Valentine's Day edition on Feb. 14.

Our own Executive Chef, Steve Terrell, will be cooking up his fourth-annual Mardi Gras dinner for the club. The dinner is just one highlight of the club's February meeting. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. with Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry set to speak at 6:30 p.m.

Terrell is a longtime fan of the Crescent City and has spent weeks at a time lost on Bourbon Street immersing himself in the culture and the community. He knows the food, the culture, and how to party New Orleans style! The Decatur Township Democratic Club is so lucky that he is willing to share it with the membership for the fourth-straight year.

Typically, Mardi Gras Night draws a huge crowd, so please plan to arrive early at 3825 Foltz Street, the Buffer Park Golf Course Clubhouse. In addition to Curry speaking, there will be several other officeholders and candidates on hand. Come out and meet the candidates after enjoying an authentic Mardi Gras meal.

As always, the club asks you to bring non-perishable food items for donation to the George T. Goodwin Center's Food Pantry. Also, please bring warm clothing such as coats, hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, or other warm items to donate to the Goodwin Center for redistribution to needy families.

It's 2011, and the Decatur Township Democratic Club is dedicating itself, once again, to putting the "D" in Decatur. The club will meet on January 10 at Buffer Park Golf Course. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. with the meeting set to being at 6:30 p.m. To kick off the new year, the club welcomes candidate for Mayor of Indianapolis, Melina Kennedy. There will be business items on the agenda as well as a time to hear from other candidates for office in 2011. Please note that Kennedy will be speaking during our dinner time!

Dues are also due for the 2011 club year. Regular memberships are available for $5.00 per person, and Commodore Club boosterships are available for $25 per person. The Decatur Township Democratic Club meets Nov. 8 at Buffer Park Golf Course, and we will be celebrating the victory of Democrats all across the country. Dinner is at 5:45 p.m. with our review of the 2010 election set to begin around 6:30 p.m.

The club invites all good Democrats to our Thanksgiving Dinner. Please bring either your best side dish or dessert.

The club will also have several other business items on its agenda that evening including the presentation of the slate of officers for the 2010 club year. Nominations will also be taken from the floor. If there is a contested office, the election will take place in December.

Decatur Township Safe Halloween is October 31

The Decatur Township Democratic Club has been invited to the Decatur Township Fire Department Safe Halloween on October 31 at the Fire Department Headquarters at 5410 High School Road from 5:30-8 p.m. Stop by as we do voter registration (for future election cycles) and our candidates hand out candy.

According to information from the Fire Department, children and their families are encouraged to come to the fire house for some safe Halloween fun. Koorsen's fire safety dog will be on hand, along with members of the Indiana Fever. Families can tour the haunted smoke house and sample food from some local eateries.

It should be fun!!!

Eichholtz To Address "Revolving Door" At Decatur Dems Meeting, Sep. 13

Judge Steve Eichholtz will be on hand to talk about the justice system and prison overcrowding at the Decatur Township Democratic Club on September 13. Eichholtz has been a judge or a commissioner for almost 30 years, and he will talk about the perceived "revolving door" phenomenon in the prison system.

The club meets at 5:45 p.m. for a free dinner. Eichholtz will speak at 6:30 p.m. There will be other candidates and officeholders on hand as well. Elected in March of 2008 to fill the remaining term of his grandmother, Julia Carson, Congressman Carson has become a leading progressive voice in Congress. IDP Chairman Parker to Address Decatur Democrats July 12

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker will be the Decatur Township Democratic Club's program speaker on July 12. Parker will speak about 6:30 p.m. at the club's monthly meeting at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz Street. Dinner and social hour is at 5:45 p.m.

Though still very young, the Baintree, Massachusetts native has been Indiana Democratic Party Chair for about six years taking office in 2004. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director of the Indiana Democratic Party and served in various other roles within party politics. He is a campaign veteran working on the 1992 re-election campaign of Evan Bayh and running Bayh's 1998 Senatorial campaign.

The club will also have some other business items to take up following Parker's presentation. As always, the club will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the George T. Goodwin Center's Food Pantry. Club dues are just $5.00 per year, and you can become a club booster for $25. Democrats under 25 years of age can join for free by simply attending a meeting.

Decatur Township Democrats Field Full Slate of Township Candidates

The Decatur Township Democratic Club is pleased to announce that the party will field a full slate of Democrats for township offices in November.

Tax professional Alexis Skriloff James is the Democratic Party candidate for Decatur Township Trustee. Her campaign website can be accessed here. This is James second run at elective office in Decatur Township.

Local attorney Steve Terrell will be the Democratic Party candidate for Decatur Township Small Claims Court Judge. Terrell ran in 2006 and received nearly 47 percent of the vote against the current incumbent. Find out more about Steve here.

Longtime Democratic leader Donald Brown will be the party's candidate for Decatur Township Constable. Brown has run for office before in Decatur Township, and he was instrumental in the revival of the Decatur Township Democratic Club.

In addition to the township candidates, the Democratic Party also has a candidate for House District 91 which encompasses most of Decatur Township. Tim Huber is running for this office. Decatur Township Democratic Club Plans Presence at Lions Club 4-H Fair June 23-26

When the Decatur Central Lions Club 4-H Fair resumes after a two-year hiatus, the Decatur Township Democratic Club will be back in the act.

The club plans to register individuals to vote, promote the club and recruit new members, introduce elected officials and candidates to current and future constituents, and provide voter education at its booth inside the Decatur Intermediate Learning Center at 5650 Mann Road. Along with exhibitors like the club, the Lions Club food operation moves indoors this year. Rides, carnival food, and normal fair activities take place outside the school.

The fair gets underway on June 23 and runs each night through June 26. Due to construction at the old fairgrounds site on the campus of Decatur Central High School, the Lions could not hold a traditional fair as it had for over 60 years. "It's great to have the fair back, and I appreciate all the Lions due for Decatur Township," said Jon Easter, Decatur Township Democratic Club President and a former Lion. "I don't think people understand how seriously that organization takes its mission of service."

Easter says the booth will be staffed on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and that it will be located inside the school building. This is a change in the past where the food and the exhibitors were outside. "It will be a change, but it will be nice to have a place where fair-goers can cool off," said Easter.

For the month of June, the club's speaker will be At-Large City-County Councillor Joanne Sanders. There you can find a variety of different types of information. You can verify your voter registration, find your polling site, preview and print your ballot, and much much more.

Marion County Clerk Beth White To Preview Primary Election at Decatur Dems Meeting on April 12

The Decatur Township Democratic Club will meet on April 12 at Buffer Park Golf Course. The featured speaker is Beth White, Marion County Clerk, who will speak about her re-election campaign as well as provide a preview of the May 4 Primary Election and the preparations for this important date. White will speak at 6:30 p.m.

As always, the club will provide a free dinner for its membership and assembled guests. The dinner will start at 5:45 p.m. Attendees are welcome to come for dinner and stay for the meeting or just come to the meeting portion of the evening. There will be a few business items on the agenda.

Education To Dominate Decatur Democrats March Meeting

A St. Patrick's Day theme and a talk about education in Decatur Township will be on the docket for the Decatur Township Democratic Club when it convenes on March 8. The speaker for the evening is Don Stinson, Superintendent of the M.S.D. of Decatur Township. The township has been hit hard by the recent downturn in the economy and the cutting of education funding by Governor Mitch Daniels.

After Stinson speaks, the club will take up a few business items. Dues are $5.00 per year, and you can show your extra support for Democrats by joining the Commodore Club for $25 per year. Students or young adults under 25 may join the club for fee simply by coming to a meeting.

While the Colts battle the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV on Feb. 7, Decatur Township Democratic Club Chef-in-Chief Steve Terrell will be cooking up his annual Mardi Gras dinner for the club for Feb. 8. The dinner is the highlight of the club's February meeting. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. with State Representatives John Barnes and Mary Ann Sullivan set to speak about the General Assembly session at 6:30 p.m.

Terrell is a longtime fan of the Crescent City and has spent weeks at a time lost on Bourbon Street immersing himself in the culture and the community. He knows the food, the culture, and how to party New Orleans style! The Decatur Township Democratic Club is so lucky that he is willing to share it with the membership for the third straight year.

Typically, Mardi Gras Night draws a huge crowd, so please plan to arrive early at 3825 Foltz Street, the Buffer Park Golf Course Clubhouse. In addition to Barnes and Sullivan speaking, there will be several other candidates on hand right before the County Democratic Party's Slating Convention on Feb. 13. Continuing a tradition of bringing great speakers to Decatur Township every month, the Decatur Township Democratic Club has booked candidate for Indiana State Auditor, Samuel Locke, to speak to the club about his candidacy on December 14 at its final 2009 regular meeting.

A Connersville native, Locke is an Indiana University graduate and was a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force. For the past few years, he has been working with non-profit groups as a fundraiser, consultant, and operations manager. Locke is an Eagle Scout and currently is the chair of the Floyd County Democratic Central Committee and Chairman of the 9th Congressional District Young Democrats.

Each year, the final monthly meeting of the Decatur Township Democratic Club is a time to reflect on a year of great accompishments and celebrate the hope of a bold future. The Decatur Township Democratic Club meets Nov. 9 at Buffer Park Golf Course, and Marshawn Wolley, President of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Indiana Democratic African-American Caucus, will talk about what the IDAAC is and what services it provides to Marion County residents interested in community service. Dinner is at 5:45 p.m. with the Wolley set to speak around 6:30 p.m.

The club invites all good Democrats to make a pot of their best chili and bring it to the meeting for our second annual Make the Rooster Crow Chili Cook-off. Carol Collester won last year with the "Hot As Barack Obama Chili". Whichever pot of chili brings in the most money in donations will be declared the winner and that winner will receive bragging rights and a small gift from the club. Please bring either your best pot of chili or side items to go with chili. Money raised on the chili cookoff will be used to help purchase a club banner.

An expert on viruses and a medical doctor headline the October 12 meeting of the Decatur Township Democratic Club.

Dr. David Sanders, a Purdue University Associate Professor of Biology, and Dr. David Orentlicher, former Indiana House Representative and Co-director of the William S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health, will speak to the club. Sanders will talk about the H1N1 flu virus commonly known as the "swine flu," and Orentlicher will address health care in the United States. Before the presentations by Dr. Sanders and Dr. Orentlicher, the club will take up few business items.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club welcomes Indiana Chapter President Douglas Meagher and Lori Morris from the Indiana Stonewall Democrats on September 14. Meagher and Morris will be speaking on GLBTQ issues in the local community as well as what the Stonewall Democrats organization does in supporting causes, advocating on important issues, and helping good candidates win elections. Decatur Township Democratic Club to Target Youth Involvement

The Decatur Township Democratic Club voted on Monday night to waive the normal $5.00 dues to join the club for young people under 25 years of age identifying themselves as Democrats.

The change in club policy comes about a week after the club's Executive Board formed a Youth Committee and President Jon Easter appointed Decatur Township resident and University of Indianapolis Student Christopher Jackson as the Youth Committee Chair. Easter said it's indicative of the club's commitment to the youth voters in Decatur Township.

"Some of the other clubs and organizations in Democratic circles have also voted to do this, and it's a great way to show the young people that our club is extending a hand to them if they wish to join us," said Easter.

The proposal did pass with a caveat. Those individuals invoking the dues waiver may vote at club membership meetings but may not hold an office with in the club's leadership structure unless they are dues-paying members. Easter said that the discussion was somewhat tense with opinions for and against the proposal to waive the dues, but he said ultimately it passed by a wide margin. "Some people felt passionately that we should not do this, and I respect what their views. Still, this is an important step to recruit the next generation of Democrats in Decatur Township," said Easter.

Jackson is a dues-paying member, and he is also the President of the College Democrats at the University of Indianapolis. In January, he was one of two local club members that attended President Obama's inauguration in Washington, D.C.

Over 50 people attended the Decatur Township Democratic Club's June meeting. The speaker for the month was United Auto Workers' Region 3 CAP Chair, Keith Neargardner. Given the tough economic times, Neargardner talked at length about the struggles the Detroit Big Three are facing.

A Decatur Township native himself, Neargardner said he is hopeful about the future of the American automotive industry. He also stated that he believes General Motors and Chrysler will emerge as stronger companies with better business plans. Neargardner credited Ford for the work it has done to improve quality and keep from going bankrupt. He also said GM's recent sale of Saturn to Roger Penske would save jobs as General Motors will continue to make the Saturn for at least two years.

Breaux, the Senate Democrats' Assistant Caucus Chair, has served Indiana's 34th Senate District since 2006 when she was appointed to the seat. She was elected to a four year term in November 2008. She also serves as the ranking minority member on the Indiana Utilities and Technology Committee and on several other committees in the Senate.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club meets April 13 at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St. Ben Davis High School junior Nasser Siadat will speak to the club about OneCityIndy, an organization Siadat and his friends co-founded. OneCityIndy is trying to put together the largest youth rally in Indiana history. The club’s speaker for the month will be Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes. Elected in 2006, Bowes and his office recently saw the duties of the nine township assessors consolidated into his office’s responsibilities. He will be on hand to talk about ongoing plans for the increased workload as well as take questions from club members and assembled guests. The club will also take up other business following Bowes’ presentation.

Please bring a canned food item or a dry food donation (instant potatoes, pancake mix, etc.), new or gently used coats, hats, gloves or mittens. Donations will benefit the George T. Oxley Lays Out Speaker's Agenda

In front of 35 attentive Decatur Township Democratic Club members, former Rep. and Lt. Gov. candidate Dennie Oxley laid out the agenda of Indiana House Speaker Pat Bauer.

Oxley, who served 10 years in the Indiana General Assembly from House District 73, did not run for re-election in 2008 so that he could join Gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson as her running mate. He now is a senior policy adviser for the Indiana House Democrats and Speaker Bauer, who was invited to speak to the club but could not due to a conflict.

Citing Governor Daniels' proposed budget that would essentially maintain education spending, Oxley pointed out a key difference between the Democratic agenda and the Republican agenda. "Governor Daniels proposes flatlining education spending, but costs keep going up across the board. This is, in reality, a cut in education spending. We just have a different view in our caucus," said Oxley who said the Democrats would continue to support education.

Oxley also said that the property tax caps that were put into state law haven't had enough time in effect to see the real impact on local governments. Because of this, Oxley said that Democrats, who hold a 52-48 advantage in the House, will likely oppose continuing the process to put the caps in the Indiana Constitution. "We believe we need more time to see the effect of the caps overall before putting it in the Constitution," said Oxley. He pointed out that the state law is all that's necessary to continue to implement the cap.

The club also heard from new Marion County Democratic Party Executive Director Adam Kirsch. Kirsch talked about upcoming fundraising for the party and the plan for the next few years as the Marion County Democratic Party attempts to re-take the Mayor's Office, Prosecutor's Office, and the City-County Council while maintaing its hold over other offices.

The club will meet next on February 9 with Mardi Gras Night. All good Democrats are welcome to attend.

Fire Prevention Topic of Discussion at December Meeting

The Decatur Township Democratic Club celebrated the holiday season Monday at Buffer Park Golf Course with a delicious dinner and a very informative presentation.

Lt. John Soeurt of the Indianapolis Fire Department and Division Chief Pascal Arnes of the Decatur Township Fire Department tag teamed on a presentation in front of the nearly 45 individuals in attendance. The presentation covered fire safety and prevention of fires in the homes and apartments of Decatur Township. The two arson investigators told stories about fires they had investigated and how those fires could have been prevented.

Among the many topics covered, Arnes and Soeurt cautioned meeting-goers on the use of candles. With the aid of a Powerpoint presentation, Arnes told the audience that candles should never be left unattended and that proper placement was key. "If you have something hanging down from your ceiling and you put a candle underneath it, you might have enough heat to start a fire," said Arnes.

Soeurt told the audience to be weary of cheap candles. "If you go to a store and you buy three candles for a dollar, you just got three candles for a dollar. Those types of candles have been known to explode in the glass holders," said Soeurt.

Space heaters are also a big problem in houses when it comes to fires. The two firefighters warned against using these heaters at all but if the use is necessary to make sure to use them correctly with proper space between the heater and anything that might catch fire. Soeurt said he investigated a fire last year that killed two children that was sparked by a space heater too close to a couch.

They also spoke out against the use of extension cords-especially with space heaters. Arnes warned that putting extension cords under carpets and rugs can be an enormous fire hazard and that extension cords that show signs of wear or being hot to the touch should be unplugged and discarded immediately. Soeurt said one of the quickest ways to start a fire in a house is to use a space heater with an extension cord.

The presentation also talked about the dangers of using turkey fryers. Soeurt advocated purchasing more expensive electric fryers with more accurate thermostats and avoiding the propane ones. Arnes said, "If you put a frozen turkey into a turkey fryer on a wooden deck, you will have one big fire." Both firefighters agreed that turkeys should be completely thawed before using a fryer of any kind. Under no circumstances should a turkey fryer or charcoal be used inside, according to Arnes and Soeurt.

Before the presentation, the club dined on a delicious dinner provided by the membership. Several elected and appointed officials attended the meeting. State Rep. Jeb Bardon, State Rep. David Orentlicher, Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes, Marion County Superior Court Judge Becky Pierson-Treacy, Marion County Superior Court Judge Mark Stoner, Marion County Superior Court Judge Jose Salinas, Court Commissioner Jeff Marchal and Court Commissioner John Alt all attended.

All meetings take place at Buffer Park Golf Course's Clubhouse, 3825 Foltz St. in Decatur Township.

At the meeting, the club will be accepting dues for the 2009 year. Club dues are just $5.00 per person per year. The club offers the option to join its Commodore Booster Club for $25.00. That includes your membership for the 2009 year.

Decatur Democrats Meet to Discuss Election; Hold Chili Cookoff

The Decatur Township Democratic Club November meeting was a great opportunity for approximately 35 club members to meet and discuss the progress made in the 2008 General Election.

Candidates shared their campaign trail memories as they urged voters and Democrats to hold current officeholders' feet to the fire on issues important to them. Marion County Surveyor-Elect Debbie Jenkins was on hand to thank the club for its hard work as was Indiana Senate candidate Mike Cesnik. Indiana House candidate Tim Huber spoke as well as five of the seven Decatur Township Advisory Board candidates. Re-elected Center Township Board Member Larry Ryan talked about his re-election campaign as well. The club sent get well wishes to Paul Fox, the club's Immediate Past President, who was recently hospitalized.

Decatur Township was one of two townships in Marion County to field a full Democratic slate, and it was the only township to field candidates in both major parties. Every Decatur Township Board candidate gained votes over candidates that had run in 2004. Two Republican incumbents actually lost votes from their 2004 totals.

The club also held its first annual Chili-Cookoff. Carol Collester was the big winner with the "Hot As Barack Obama Chili". Other competitors included John Soeurt (Southwest Chicken Chili), Steve Terrell (Hot as Michelle Obama Chili), Pat Andrews (White Chicken Chili-So Mary Hall Won't Starve Chili), and Sylvia Younger (Just Chili).

Club members also were presented with a slate of candidates for 2009's club offices. No one ran against the slate of candidates which included all the current officers in their same positions, thus the current officers of the will remain in office of 2009. The club voted to cast a unanimous ballot for the unopposed slate.

Before adjourning, club member Delsue Minifield spoke briefly about her experience at Senator Barack Obama's General Election night celebration in Chicago's Grant Park.

The club's next meeting will be December 8 at 5:45 p.m. Pending anything agenda additions, here will be no major business to discuss...only to celebrate a great 2008.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club meets Monday, November 10 at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

At the meeting, the club will present its slate of officers for the 2009 year. No changes are expected to the status quo, but nominations will be taken from the floor. Sanders Points Out Budget Discrepancies at Dem Meeting

City-County Councillor At-Large Joanne Sanders presented many holes in the recently approved city-county budget. The Democratic leader of the Council said that monies set aside for some projects have apparently been co-opted for others.

Speaking in front of the Decatur Township Democratic Club on Monday, Sanders pointed out how $10 million set aside for 100 new police officers has resulted in no new police officers. "Research shows that a city our size needs about 2,000 officers," said Sanders. "The 100 new officers would have gotten us to 1,735. This new budget just passed has zero new officers."

Sanders also pointed out budget problems in other areas including $16 million in the budget for new police cars. Sanders said, "I understand that we needed to replace some police cars, but that figure was just too high."

Councillor Sanders also attacked Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard for lobbying in favor of House Bill 1001 which placed caps on property taxes and lowered property taxes for some home owners. She said that the HB1001 also cuts the budget of local governments, "They took the revenue sources away as well as the expenses thus local government funding will be on a backslide for the next two or three years."

The Council's new budget also featured cutbacks in the parks, in the arts and in other places. Sanders said that cutbacks like those effect the economic growth in cities like Indianapolis by perhaps scaring away companies that might want vibrant arts and nice parks for their employees. She said Indianapolis is not doing well when compared to other cities of similar size in these areas.

With the General Election approaching, the club heard from candidates Mike Rodman (Marion County Treasurer), Frank Lloyd, Jr. (Marion County Coroner), Judge Annie Christ-Garcia (Marion County Superior Court Judge), Mike Cesnik (Indiana Senate District 35), and Tim Huber (Indiana House District 91). All seven Democratic candidates for Decatur Township Advisory Board spoke including John Soeurt (District 1), Ruth Drook (District 2), Jon Easter (District 3), Pat Rigsby (District 4), Paul Fox (District 5), Alexis Skriloff James (District 6), and Wanda Bryce (District 7). The Barack Obama campaign also sent representatives.

After some business items, Fox took the floor to talk about upcoming preparations for the General Election on Nov. 4.

City-County Council Minority Leader and Councillor At-Large, Joanne Sanders, will speak to the Decatur Township Democratic Club on October 13. A free, carry-in dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. with the meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m. at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St.

Sanders has been a member of the City-County Council since 1999 and is now in her third term serving Marion County as an At-Large Councillor. Last year, Sanders was selected as the Council's Democratic leader. The Gary native is an active union member and union executive. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Management from Purdue University and a Masters Degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University. Sanders was the lone at-large councillor to hold her seat in 2007.

As this is the last club meeting prior to the Nov. 4 election, there will be much to discuss. Several candidates are expected to attend the meeting, and there will be representatives from national and statewide campaigns. Decatur Township Democratic Coordinator Paul Fox is also expected to speak on the party's preparations for the General Election. The club will also name a nominating committee to consider candidates for the 2009 year. Those candidates will be elected at the club's December meeting. All ward chairs, precinct committeepersons, and vice committeepersons are asked to attend.

Oxley Takes Fight to Mitch; Wood Comes Home

With 50 Decatur Township Democrats and friends in the audience, Dennie Oxley and Dr. Richard Wood stated their cases for support in the 2008 General Election. Oxley, running for Lieutenant Governor, and Wood, running for Superintendent of Public Instruction, spoke on Monday at the Decatur Township Democratic Club and presented their platforms for the offices they aspire to serve in for the next four years.

Wood, a former teacher and administrator in the MSD of Decatur Township, talked about the future. "It's better to invest in building children now rather than investing in repairing adults later," said Wood, who recently retired from his job as Superintendent of the Tippecanoe School Corporation after 19 years. He has also served as a teacher in IPS, a principal at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, and an Assistant Superintendent in the MSD of Warren Township. Wood was presented with a Decatur Central State Championship baseball t-shirt and a good luck card from a few of the teachers still teaching at Decatur Central who worked with Wood in the 1970's.

After Wood's comments, Rep. Oxley took the floor. The 10-year veteran of the state legislature wasted no time in attacking the record of Indiana's current Governor, Mitch Daniels. "Mitch Daniels often calls Indiana an island of growth in a sea of despair. That island (Daniels is on) is called fantasy island."

Oxley talked about Indiana's acute economic troubles from job losses to higher taxes (despite, as Oxley noted, the Governor's claims to the contrary). The English, Indiana native also brought up Governor Daniels' use of state vehicles and helicopters to take him to political events. "Governor Daniels needs a helicopter to take him from his mansion on Geist Reservoir to the airport," said Oxley. "That wouldn't be necessary if he lived in the Governor's Residence (on Meridian St.)."

After the speakers, the club heard from candidates or representatives of candidates for election in November. Present were candidates Mike Cesnik who is running for Indiana Senate in District 35. Decatur Township Advisory Board candidates Ruth Drook (District 2), Jon Easter (District 3), Pat Rigsby (District 4), Paul Fox (District 5) and Wanda Bryce (District 7) were also in attendance. Other candidates represented included Barack Obama (President), Nels Ackerson (4th District Congress) and Jill Long Thompson (Governor). George Farley, the Deputy Assessor for Decatur Township and a candidate for Center Township Advisory Board, also spoke briefly.

Fox, the Decatur Township Democratic Party Coordinator, briefed the club on preparations for the November General Election. He reported that the party is in good shape, but that there is much work to do. Out of 31 polling site changes in the entire county by the Mayor's Office, five polling sites will change in Decatur Township, but there will be no official notification mailed to voters. He encouraged Decatur voters to visit www.indianavoters.com to check their registration status and polling site.

The club meets again on October 13. The speaker will be the minority leader of the City-County Council, Councillor At-Large, Joanne Sanders.

Rep. A former teacher and school administrator, Oxley graduated from Crawford County High School and Indiana University Southeast. He most recently worked as a business development representative for an engineering firm. Oxley is a lifelong resident of English, Indiana. He and his wife Jayme are the parents of two young girls, Demi and Audrey. In June, Oxley accepted the Democratic nomination as Jill Long Thompson's running mate in the 2008 Gubernatorial Election.

After 36 years as a school teacher and administrator, Dr. Richard Wood recently retired and decided to seek the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Indianapolis native was an administrator for a few years time in Decatur Township Schools before moving on to become Principal at Carroll High School (Fort Wayne) and an Assistant Superintendent in Warren Township. He went on to lead the Tippecanoe School Corporation for 19 years as Superintendent. Dr. Wood and his wife Carol have two grown children.

The Decatur Township Democratic Club will also have business to conduct before adjournment, so a short business meeting will follow the meeting program. Other candidates for office and all officeholders are invited and welcome at our meetings. Last month, 80 people attended our meeting, so it provides an outlet to meet many Democrats from across the political spectrum. Anytime the closet comes open and more chairs have to come out, it's a good thing for Democrats in Decatur Township. With a jam-packed program full of great speakers and officeholders, the Decatur Township Democratic Club drew a near-record 80 meeting attendees.

The Democrats (and at least one Republican) gathered to hear 7th District Congressman André Carson, Marion County Democratic Party Chairman Ed Treacy, and 4th District Congressional candidate Nels Ackerson speak as well as honor the IHSAA Class 4A State Baseball Champion Decatur Central Hawks baseball team. The food for the meeting provided by resident lunch lady Mabel (played by Pat Rigsby) followed a "back to school night theme" menu of meatloaf and macaroni and cheese.

Carson's remarks revolved around his accomplishments in Congress thus far since being elected to fill the 7th District seat in March. He cited the millions of dollars he has been able to bring back to the community in the form of federal dollars to benefit public safety, small businesses, flood relief, and other programs. Carson also encouraged others to run for public office saying it was a "good time to run" no matter your race, your gender, or your age.

Ackerson talked about his opponent, Congressman Steve Buyer's broken campaign promise to only run for three terms or six years in office back in 1992. "I plan to help him find his way back to Indiana after 16 years," said Ackerson. Despite the partisan rhetoric, Ackerson said he's worked for Republicans and Democrats in his political and legal career and will do it again in Congress.

Treacy attacked Mayor Greg Ballard's new budget proposal for cutting needed monies from the Sheriff's budget and the court system. Treacy called Ballard the "accidental mayor" and criticized him for shortsighted leadership saying that the cuts in the jail's budget could erase the hard work put in by Sheriff Anderson and the Peterson Administration to get the jail released from Judge Sarah Evans Barker's court order to improve conditions and reduce overcrowding conditions.

Also speaking was retired UAW Regional Director Terry Thurman. Thurman, who is expected to soon take up some role with the Marion County Democratic Party, said that "now is the time" for Democrats to take back offices held by Republicans.

Decatur Democrats plan blockbuster program on Aug. 11

As if a sitting Congressman wasn't enough of a program, the Decatur Township Democratic Club has also booked another excellent speaker for the Aug. 11 meeting. New Marion County Democratic Party Chair Ed Treacy will join Congressman André Carson on the marquee and the club has extended invitations to Nels Ackerson, the 4th District Candidate for Congress, and other Marion County and Decatur Township candidates to speak during candidates' time.

Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. The meeting will get underway promptly at 6:30 p.m. Besides the great main event title card of speakers, the club will have other business to attend to including electing two new officers to serve on its Executive Council. The club will also consider starting a logo contest and other business items.

Treacy elected to lead Marion County Democratic Party for second stint

Marion County Democratic Party Chair Ed Treacy was unanimously elected by a standing room only group of rowdy Democrats on Wednesday evening. Treacy, who served as Marion County Democratic Party Chair from 2000 to 2006, wasted no time at throwing down the gauntlet.

His goals include filling every precinct board across the county, taking over offices held by Republicans and re-taking offices won recently by the opposition. "We are not going to give any ground to the Republicans," said Treacy, who promised to fight hard in traditional Republican strongholds such as Perry, Franklin and Decatur Townships. Treacy also criticized Republican Mayor Greg Ballard for a perceived lack of vision and failing to deliver on making the city safer.

Decatur Township Coordinator Paul Fox helped put Treacy's name in nomination for the post giving a speech highlighting the progress made by Democrats in Decatur Township under and after Treacy's first stint as party chair. Treacy will speak at the Decatur Township Democratic Club's meeting on Aug. 11.

After Hearing Crime Report, Club Approves New Constitution and By-Laws At July Meeting

Sgt. Lori Demaree of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department talked crime at the July 14 meeting of the Decatur Township Democratic Club. The 23-year law enforcement veteran gave gathered Decatur Township Democrats and friends information about police runs in their neighborhoods and tips on how to cut down on crime.

"We have to watch out for each other," said Demaree. "We don't live in Mayberry anymore. We have to lock doors and turn on porch lights."

Demaree came armed with statistics on police runs across Decatur Township as well as other resource information for the public including how to access the Crime View Community application on the city's website at www.indygov.org. Demaree invited anyone with specific questions about police activity in neighborhoods to call the IMPD Southwest District at (317) 327-6400. Demaree said juvenile crime has been a trend in Decatur Township as well as automobile larceny and other crimes related to gasoline theft. "We have received several reports of people breaking into sheds and stealing nothing but gasoline," said Demaree.

She also said that the police department offers several services such as unattended house reports (can be filed to tell the police you are on vacation or away from your home), requests for extra patrols and the opportunity to ride with an officer.

In other business, the club:
Approved its new Constitution and its new By-laws. They were signed into effect after the meeting by President Jon Easter and Secretary Mike Cesnik. The Nominating Committee will present, for the club's approval, two candidates to finish out 2008 as Executive Board Members at the August 11 meeting.

Heard from several candidates and representatives for office. All seven Democratic candidates for Decatur Township Advisory Board were on hand: Wanda Bryce, Ruth Drook, Easter, Paul Fox, Alexis Skriloff James, Pat Rigsby, and John Soeurt. Marion County Treasurer Mike Rodman spoke briefly. Other candidates included Cesnik (Indiana Senate District 35), Tim Huber (Indiana House District 91), Debbie Jenkins (Marion County Surveyor). Candidates Barack Obama (President), Jill Long Thompson (Governor), Jim Osborn (Marion Superior Court Judge), Judge Gerald ZOre (Marion Superior Court Judge) and Lou Rosenberg (Marion Circuit Court Judge) were all represented by surrogates at the meeting.

Decatur Democrats to talk crime, consider Constitution/By-Laws July 14

Lori Demaree, Community Resource Officer of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, will speak about crime in Decatur Township and in Marion County and be available to answer questions at the Decatur Township Democrat Club meeting on July 14 at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St. The club's monthly carry-in dinner begins at 5:45 p.m. with Sgt. Cesnik to challenge Young for Senate Seat

Thursday evening, Mike Cesnik was elected unanimously by caucus-goers to challenge incumbent R. Michael Young in November for the Indiana Senate District 35 seat. Cesnik, a former teacher and retired therapist, holds two Masters Degrees and promises to make education, civil rights, and the environment as three of his main issues.

Cesnik also promises to be a good listener to his constituents because he admits, "That's what I do as a therapist." Even though he is retired, Cesnik still is an addiction counselor working with clients about ten hours a week. A native of Haughville on the Westside of Indianapolis, Cesnik lives in Decatur Township with his wife Jackie. He has five grown children and is a proud grandparent.

Senate District 35 includes all of Decatur Township, parts of Wayne and Center Townships, and runs into Johnson and Morgan Counties.

Caucus Thursday for Senate District 35 Ballot Vacancy

Pence to speak to Decatur Dems, May 12

Democratic Candidate for Indiana Attorney General, Linda Pence headlines the May meeting of the Decatur Township Democrat Club. The club will meet Monday, May 12 at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. with the meeting and Pence’s remarks set to begin around 6:30 p.m.

While Pence is the headliner for the meeting, the club will also address the historic 2008 primary election, its results, and the future ramifications for the party. The Decatur Township Democrat Club will meet on April 14th at 5:45 p.m. The featured speaker is Mike Rodman, Marion County Treasurer, who will speak about his re-election campaign and his activites in the treasurer's office. Rodman will speak at 6:30 p.m.

Clinton brings campaign to Westside

Club member Sheila Radloff and Club Vice President Mary Hall meet Hillary Clinton at a rally in Anderson.

Hillary Clinton has been trekking across Indiana as of late bringing her campaign to the Hoosier state in a manner unseen for years.

Clinton stopped on the Westside of Indianapolis and touted "Solutions for the American Economy." She said the 2008 election in Indiana is about "jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs..." Hillary also implored the crowd to hire her because she said she's ready to tackle the hard issues.

Right off the top of her speech at Ben Davis, she told the estimated 2,000 people that she would not give up the fight for the nomination until everyone has had a chance to vote. Clinton said that she's a fighter and will continue to fight for Americans throughout her time in public office.

After her remarks, Clinton took questions from the audience. Club member and former Treasurer Tim Kilbourne asked Clinton about her health insurance plan to provide universal health care to all Americans.

In addition to Hillary's many visits, former President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton have been crisscrossing Indiana as well. The primary is May 6!

Obama comes to Plainfield

In a stirring speech touting change and unity, Barack Obama became the first of the major Democratic Presidential candidates to visit Indiana in a town hall meeting on Saturday at Plainfield High School. Obama promised a vigorous campaign in Indiana saying that this visit would not be his last to the state. He also called on volunteers to aid his campaign across the state.

Obama said he was inspired to run for President by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s words calling for the "fierce urgency of now" in solving our nation's problems and issues. Obama said that after campaigning across thousands of miles, kissing thousands of babies, shaking thousands of hands, and talking to voters that he could report that America was "ready for a change." Obama also took questions from the crowd of over 2,000 people in attendance.

During his remarks, Obama recalled the speech that Robert F. Kennedy gave in Indianapolis nearly 40 years ago the night Dr. King was assassinated. He talked about how Kennedy soothed the anger of the crowd. "At that moment of anguish, (Kennedy) said, we've got a choice... in taking the rage and bitterness and disappointment and letting it fester and dividing us further, so that we no longer see each other as Americans, but we see each other as separate and apart and at odds with each other. Or we can take a different path that says we have different stories, but we have common dreams and common hopes. And we can decide to walk down this road together."

Continuing his remarks, Obama talked about how he believed the "forces of division have started to raise their ugly heads again." Obama added, "We’ve got a lot of pent-up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding. But what I continue to believe in is that this country wants to move beyond these kinds of divisions. That this country wants something different. And so – I just want to say to everybody here that as somebody who was born into a diverse family, as somebody who has little pieces of America all in me, I will not allow us to lose this moment, where we cannot forget about our past and not ignore the very real forces of racial inequality and gender inequality and the other things that divide us. We have to come together. That’s what this campaign is about."

André Carson wins Special Election

André Carson claimed the title Congressman after defeating Republican Jon Elrod and Libertarian Sean Shepard in the 7th District Congressional Special Election. The Decatur Township Democrat Club heartily congratulates André and his campaign staff for his big win.

Dems Get Taxing Info from Assessor

Despite the rainy night, iffy forecast, and the change of date, the March 3 Decatur Township Democrat Club meeting still drew over 40 Democrats.

After a great meal, Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes explained the property tax assessment process and answered audience questions. Bowes also talked about the reassessment of business property and how that might effect Decatur Township taxpayers.

The club also heard from slated Superior Court candidates David Dreyer, Jerry Zore, Jim Osborn, and Garland Graves. State Rep. David Orentlicher spoke briefly about actions at the State House and his candidacy for the 7th District Congressional seat in the primary. Indiana House District 91 candidate Thomas Konstantine Pappas was on hand to introduce himself. Wayne Township Assessor Mike McCormick spoke briefly about the Wayne Township Community Candidates Breakfast on March 8. Decatur Township Board candidates Wanda Bryce and Alexis Skrilloff-James introduced themselves. Also Jeff Marchal and Steve Poore, former candidates, thanked the club for its support.

Township Coordinator Paul Fox went over preparations for the upcoming Special Election and the Primary Election in May.

The next club meeting is April 14 at 5:45 p.m. for dinner. Meeting program is to be announced.

Marion County Assessor to address Decatur Democrats on March 3

Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes will speak to the Decatur Township Democrat Club on March 3 about the re-assessment process and its potential impact on property tax bills in Decatur Township. The club meets monthly at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St. Dinner and social time is at 5:45 p.m. with Bowes set to speak at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting and dinner are free and open to the public.

Also on the club’s agenda will be preparations for the March 11 Special 7th District Congressional Election. The club will also address the results of the Feb. 16 Democratic Slating Convention. Several candidates for office will likely be on hand as the campaign ramps up for the May primary election.

The club typically meets on the second Monday of each month, but, since the room at Buffer Park Golf Course where the club meets is also a polling site for the March 11 election, it was decided at the February meeting to move the meeting a week back to March 3. In April, the club will return to its practice of meeting on the second Monday of the month.

Snowy Forecast Fails to Keep 60 Democrats from Celebrating Mardi Gras, Listening to Clerk Beth White

The Decatur Township Democrat Club met on Feb. 11. After dining on a delicious Mardi Gras themed-dinner prepped by Steve Terrell, Marion County Clerk Beth White answered questions about the 2008 elections. Historically, there will be three elections. White said that no one she has talked to can remember the last Special Election for a Congressional seat in Marion County.

White explained that there will be a central count for the 7th District's Special Election because there is very little time to turn around the machines for the 2008 Primary in May. Ballots will be voted in the 7th District's precincts and then be brought to the Convention Center. There, they will be sorted and run through machines under the supervision of watchers from the political parties. There still is some controversy as to the handling of absentee ballots. Republicans prefer to send the ballots to the precincts. White said she would prefer to keep the ballots back at the central count site and send a list of absentee voters to the individual precincts. City-County offices will NOT be closed on Special Election Day. Early voting will continue through March 10 at noon except for President's Day.

White said interest in the May Primary Election is up because the Presidential race is so competitive on the Democratic side. News organizations like CNN are showing there is virtually no chance either Democratic candidate for President can gain a enough delegates between now and then to claim the nomination. In May, Democrats will also select their local and statewide candidates for the General Election. In the primary, voters will vote for school board slots as well. The General Election will take place in November.

Township Coordinator Paul Fox shared with the group the difficulties of the new polling places and new polling precincts. Fox was critical of the Mayor's Office for not approving a bi-partisan list of Decatur Township polling sites and instead going with an unworkable list apparently supplied by the same group that re-precincted.

In other news, President Jon Easter appointed committee chairs. Fox was appointed Membership Chair. Terrell was appointed Constitution and By-Laws Revision Chair, and Patty Rigsby was appointed Social Chair. Easter also announced the club would be re-writing its Constitution and By-Laws. The club also voted to suspend the rules and operate as in the past until the new Constitution and By-Laws can be approved.

The club's next meeting will be March 3 NOT March 10 at 5:45 p.m.

The Decatur Township Democrat club will hold its February monthly meeting on the 11th. Dinner/social time is 5:45 p.m. with the meeting set to begin at 6:30. The club meets at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 Foltz St.

There will be two speakers on the program. Beth White, Marion County Clerk, will address the club about the historic 2008 election season which will include three sets of elections. The second speaker will be candidate for the 7th District Congressional seat, Andre' Carson. Carson will talk about his plans for the 7th District when elected.

Also on the agenda will be a review of the Decatur Township Democrat Club Constitution and By-laws that were last updated in 1983. The club also will ask for volunteers to sit on committees and work with appointed committee chairs to further the club's mission. The club also invites candidates for the Feb. 16 slating convention to participate in candidate's time. Candidates: please keep your comments to two minutes or less.

Former City-County Council candidate Steve Terrell will serve the Mardi Gras-themed dinner. The even-numbered precincts are asked to supplement Terrell's legendary culinary skill with desserts, drinks, and other sides.

Nearly 60 Democrats and Friends Ring in 2008 at Decatur Township Democrat Club Meeting

The room was so full, club officers had to bring out more tables. It's a good problem to have for the Decatur Township Democrat Club. With the third-largest meeting attendance in club history, the club kicked off the 2008 year with a bang and another jam-packed program.

After a brilliant dinner provided by the club and the club members, speaker Nels Ackerson, candidate for U.S. Congress in the 4th District, gave a wide-ranging talk about his plans for a new direction if he is to be elected to Congress. Under new precinct configurations, six of Decatur Township's 15 voting precincts fall into the 4th District. Nine of the precincts fall into the 7th Congressional District, and Andre' Carson, Democratic Nominee for the March 11 Special Election, was on hand to lay out his vision for his term in Congress.

The club then heard from several elected officials and sitting judges. Among them were David Orentlicher of the Indiana House of Representatives, Superior Court Judge Jose Salinas, and Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes. The incumbent judges from the Marion County Superior Court on the 2008 ballot also spoke at the meeting Judge Gerald Zore, Judge David Shaheen, Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, Judge Annie Christ Garcia, Judge David Dreyer, and Sally McCarty (for Judge Pat McCarty). Candidates for the 2008 Superior Court also were given a chance to speak. They included Mark Batties, Angela Davis, Garland Graves, Jeff Marchal, Alex Murphy, Jim Osborn, and Vicky Ransberger. Candidates for Marion County Circuit Court Steve Poore and Lou Rosenberg also spoke. Poore sent regrets for Superior Court candidate Doug Stephens who cited a family conflict for missing the meeting.

The club then elected new officers for the 2008 year: Jon Easter, President; Mary Hall, Vice President; Mike Cesnik, Secretary; Mary Wolf, Treasurer. Outgoing three-term President Paul Fox handed the gavel to Easter after the election. Before handing over the reins, Fox explained the effects of the re-precincting on Decatur Township. He also talked extensively about the organization of the special election on March 11.

Andre Carson wins Caucus, Democratic nomination for Special Election

City-County Councillor Andre' Carson, the grandson of the late Julia Carson, has won the Democratic nomination for the upcoming Special Election to determine who will fill out the remainder of Congresswoman Carson's term. Carson prevailed on the first ballot at this morning's caucus of the 7th District Precinct Committeepeople. The caucus took place in the auditorium at Shortridge Middle School at 10:00 a.m.

Carson won with 223 out of 439 votes cast. State Representative David Orentlicher finished second with 123 votes. None of the other six candidates approached the support of the top two candidates. Caucus-goers voted for their candidates of choice on the I-Votronic voting machines. Members of the Marion County Election Board, Marion County Clerk Beth White, and representatives from ES&S, the Ivotronic machine manufacturer were on hand to make sure voting moved smoothly.

PCs checked in, signed in and were given credentials and wristbands. Credentials were checked at the auditorium door and again before voting. Both a signed credential and wristband were required to vote. Credentials were hole punched after the voting in case of a second ballot. One was not necessary.

Jim Schellinger to address Decatur Democrats

On Nov. 12, Jim Schellinger will speak to the Decatur Township Democrat Club about his run for the Governor's Office in 2008. Schellinger will become the third Gubernatorial candidate to visit the club and speak on the 2008 Election Cycle. The meeting is free and open to the public. Club dues are just $5.00.

The club will also be discussing the General Election results from 2007's municipal races and naming a nomination committee for new officers in 2008. The club will not meet in December.

This month, the club welcomes Lt. Col. Alex Murphy. Murphy is currently serving our nation in the Indiana National Guard. He recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq and will be sharing his war experiences. A Master Commissioner in the Marion County Superior Courts, Murphy is attached to the JAG Corps and helped to train officials in the Iraqi Judicial System.

Thank you all for serving important roles in the ’07 General Election, to be held Tuesday, Nov. 6. We need everyone’s cooperation in making it run smoothly and to increase the voter turnout for area Democrats. Local elections are VERY IMPORTANT!

It takes 60 individuals to staff our 20 township precincts on election day, in addition to the Precinct Committeemen and Vice-Precinct Committeemen. We are grateful to have virtually all positions filled, with a sizable number of backup substitutes in case of last-minute emergencies, which always occur.

Decatur Twp. is the envy of the entire county in that we consistently fill our election boards of pollworkers well in advance of election day! And they show up!

A snapshot of our workers in the upcoming election indicates 14 new pollworkers, including six new Inspectors. In addition we have three new PC/VPCs on our roster of generous, civic-minded individuals. All but five are Decatur Twp. residents and the vast majority are assigned to their home precincts, an enviable achievement.

An important reminder: if you are not working in your home precinct or a shared polling site with your precinct and another, it will be necessary to vote an Absentee ballot. This may be done by requesting a ballot by mail or by voting in person at the Election Board in the City-County Bldg. downtown. Applications can be downloaded from www.indygov.org/clerk.

Another reminder: deadline for updating voter registration is Oct. 6 or 30 days prior to the Nov. 6 election day. Tell your relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers about this deadline, especially 18-year-olds who might be voting in their first election! Also inform them of the correct voting sites, in the event they have not voted recently or voting for the first time.

Perhaps some voting sites have changed since the last time they voted. Anyone can check online: www.IndianaVoters.com to confirm this vital information.

Decatur Township Democrats Welcome Jill Long Thompson, Sept. 10

Gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson will address Decatur Township Democrats on September 10 at the September club meeting. Thompson, a former Congresswoman and Under Secretary of Agriculture in the Bill Clinton Administration, announced her candidacy for Governor in July. Long Thompson becomes the second of the three announced Democratic candidates to address the club. A late-July poll by the Beneson Group showed Long Thompson as the front runner for the Democratic nomination in this early stage. Also speaking at the meeting will be former U.S. Rep. David Evans.

Mayor Peterson Surprises Club with Visit, Talk at August Meeting

The Mayor spoke about the progress of the City of Indianapolis and Marion County during the Peterson Administration and produced a solid case as to why he deserves to be re-elected to a third term.

Peterson touted the success of his charter schools program, the updating of city sewers, the progress made at cleaning up White River, and the securing of the pensions of our police and firefighters as accomplishments. The Mayor also proudly talked about the changes in the criminal justice system and how the Marion County Jail has improved under the Peterson Administration.

Not shying away from the tough issues, Peterson also addressed the topic on homeowners' minds right now...property taxes. The mayor talked about how consolidation will affect property taxes positively by saving money. He said that only 20 percent of the property tax money actually goes to the city and county government while nearly 50 percent goes to the public school system. Peterson answered several questions from club members. He also said that while property taxes rose county-wide by triple digits in some places that city-county spending accounted for just three percent of that hike.

Treasurer Rodman spoke on the payment plan allowing people to pay their property taxes over time. He also warned that the Governor's reassessment might actually RAISE some property taxpayers' bills. Rodman also told taxpayers to be vigilant and to take a close look at an insert that is coming out with new property tax bills to see exactly where their property tax dollars are going. He encouraged taxpayers to attend school board meetings and township advisory board meetings to understand more about where the money you spend on taxes goes.

Chairman O'Connor talked about the condition of the Marion County Democratic Party. He also talked about the progress of the party in aiding the Marion County Clerk's Office in finding poll workers. Decatur Township once again leads the county in making sure all of its slots are filled.

Also unannounced as a speaker was Democratic candidate for Congress in the Fourth District, Nels Ackerson. A Zionsville resident, Ackerson talked about his plans for fixing our nation's problems if he wins the party nomination and is able to beat Representative Steve Buyer in the fall of 2008. While the numbers don't look good for Democrats in the 4th, Ackerson cited the crossover votes that pushed Evan Bayh to a 130,000 vote win over Marvin Scott in 2006.

The meeting was well attended with nearly 60 people filling the room. Please make plans to come to the meeting on Monday, September 10.

Decatur Democrats Welcome Mike Rodman and Mike O'Connor on August 13

The Decatur Township Democrat Club will welcome Marion County Democratic Party Chair Mike O'Connor and Marion County Treasurer Mike Rodman on August 13. Dinner time is 5:45 p.m. with the meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. The club meets at Buffer Park Golf Course, 3825 S. Foltz Street in Decatur Township.
